Details

Gond tribal art is practiced by one of the largest tribes in India with whom it also shares its name. The word Gond comes from Kond, which means green mountains in the Dravidian idiom. This art was originally done on walls coated with mud and cow dung as a symbol of good fortune. Starting in the early 1980s, artisans from Madhya Pradesh transformed their ritual performing art into a narrative visual art.
