Special Features

Jyoti Lal Karn is an artist specializing in Madhubani paintings. Being the birth place of some of the many celebrated folk tales of India, it comes out quite naturally that the natives of Mithila have an inherent quality to narrate visually captivating stories. These visual narratives are known as Madhubani Paintings, literally meaning the ‘Forest of honey’. Madhubani is a district in the state of Bihar, India and this tribal art form can be traced back to 2,500 years ago. These paintings depict an assembly of symbolic images of the lotus plant, the bamboo grove, fishes, birds and snakes in union. There are 5 different types of Madhubani paintings mainly - Kohbar, Bharani, Godana, Tantrik and Kachani.

The intricate art form was passed on to Jyoti by her father-in-law and mother-in-law who are National award winners for Madhubani paintings. She has been an artist for the past 11 years. Jyoti uses broomstick as brushes and natural colors from leaves, flowers, charcoal etc. as paint color. Her style of madhubani is a combination of both Kachani (line painting) & Bharani (color painting).
