Artisan in the Spotlight

Steve Scott
United States

biography

Steve studied computational design and parametric architecture at Pratt Institute, and the University of Pennsylvania. Unable to find work in the construction industry, he applied his computational design skills to jewelry. In 2014 he worked for Rubertones CAD and Casting working as a CAD artist and web developer, where he learned how to design fine jewelry, and designed his first computationally-designed ring. Finding he was a better programmer than drafter, in 2015 he moved to Newark, New Jersey to earn his Master of Science in Computer Science at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Continuing applying computational design to jewelry, in 2021 he founded his company Baroque++, and established a web presence selling jewelry online.

Artist's Perspective

I have always been a little clumsy with hands. Instead of sculpting or drafting, I set up mathematical scenarios and watch my designs grow and emerge, simulating natural processes. Processes include capillaries forming in embryos, orbits of satellites, snowflakes freezing, trees, vortexes, bubbles, sea shells, etc. I design on the computer, and 3d-print the wax, which is cast into metal.

My business is called Baroque++, and it embraces the maximalism of the baroque aesthetic and modern technology. My work is full of ornament, detail, and complexity. It is biophilic, resembling nature, and fractal, with self-similarity between the small and large scale. By using math I can create designs way more complex then I could sculpt. I do NOT use AI, I write the algorithms myself.
